Living Sustainably: Lean & Green as a Way of Life

L

homeiving Sustainably: "Green" is a buzzword throughout the media today. Many people buy certain hybrids, carbon offsets, use compact fluorescent bulbs to go along with the idea of green. The truth of the matter is that our society is so dependent on inefficient, polluting technologies, that these steps alone will make minimal impact.

Lean principles are about constant incremental improvement. If we as a society are to make the shift from our current technological base to a more harmonious one, it will require all of us to constantly look for new ways to save energy, recycle more, and act locally. Sustainability starts on the personal level, moves outward to our homes, blocks, communities, states, regions, countries, and eventually the world.

G

reenroofs: In urban settings, greenroofs are a no brainer. The greenroof market is developing rapidly in every major American city and will continue to do so as long as energy and environmental issues such as climate change are with us. Richard Heller has been designing, building, and caring for greenroofs for more than ten years. He offers knowledge, how to, as well as market development, experience, and training for those new to this thriving niche.

L

ean is the Road to Green: Richard Heller studied alter native technology at Vassar College and in 1996, built his first green roof, instantly recognizing this technology as the future of urban rooftops. Through his company Greener By Design, Richard has educated the public, and promoted sustainable landscape practices and greenroofs. Greener By Design has built and maintained more square footage of greenroofs in the New York urban area, including Silver Cup Studios in Long Island City. In 2006 Greener By Design embraced lean practices, and discovered that the most efficient processes exist in nature. Embracing lean principles is the road to greener practices.

A seasoned public speaker and published writer, Richard Heller has presented at the NESEA's sustainable buildings conference, the NYC chapter of the AIA, led seminars for the NYSTA, the Plant Landcare Network, schools, community groups and numerous architectural firms.
